What Is A Computer Printer ?

April 14, 2011

A printer is a device that lets the user print items such as letters and pictures on a piece of paper. For this, it has to be connected to a computer. It can also function with digital cameras to print directly that too, without being connected to a computer.

There are many different types of printers available in markets today. They are: inkjet printers, also known as bubble jet printers that use colored ink to use on a paper; laser printers transfer tiny particles of toner on the paper; plotters, that use special pens are large format inkjet printers.

Daisy wheel printer is a typewriting printer in which the output looks hand typed with excellent looking text. The other type of printer, the dot-matrix printer is no more used by anyone. It used a ribbon and made a lot of noise.

Dye-sublimation printers produce very high quality images. Three colors cyan, magenta and yellow are used. Each color is printed one at a time from cellophane sheets. The image is then sealed with a clear top layer. Some small photographic printers use this process.

The functioning of the printers is as follows. Printers are programmed using a programming language. The printer interprets the program and then produces the result. There are two such languages. One is page description language and the other is printer control language.

It is the page description language that decides what the page should look like. The program in the page description language is sent to the printer that interprets them. Printer control languages contain information that is specific to the printer model. They are at a lower level then page description languages.

You can see everything on hard copy whatever you see in computer monitor, you can store all the information in your file for future reference, prints shiny colorful pictures. The cons of a printer are that it runs out of ink very easily and ink is expensive, old printers take longer to print, waste of paper- a natural resource.

Observe the following when using the printer. Do not put your hand inside the printer or touch the ink cartridges during printing. Do not move the print head by hand; otherwise you may damage the printer.
